On Sunday I will be racing for the second year in a row in such an emblematic venue for triathlon: Roth. This city of the Bayern area is quite famous due to the Challenge of Roth, that will take place on July 12th this year and is considered like one of the best races across Europe. To give you an insights, the slots barely last more than 2 days and you need to book yours around October.
A bunch of pro athletes is coming every year, like Eneko Llanos or Timo Bratch, Dirck Bockel Mirinda Carfrae or Rachel Joyce. In definitive, a competition to the bucket list but a difficult race to get in.
Moreover, Roth turns around triathlon. When you drive along the A9 heading to Munich, you can already see a brown signal with the quote “Triathlonen Region“. Then, your heart starts to pump faster =)
After the warming up, let’s talk about the little brother of the Challenge, so the Rothsee Triathlon. The race is a party including 2 days of pure triathlon. There are a bunch of competitions, including Sprint distances, Olympic, juniors, relays or Bundesliga B series (sprint format).
My choice was the Olympic distance, so I will start on Sunday in the first group, with the fastest guys. Last year I had a very bad competition over there due to an injury and on Sunday I would like to improve my 2014’s mark.
The Swimming will take place in the Rothsee lake, that is quite brown and not too clean I’ve to say. Distance, 1.500m and I expect a nice battle in the beginning. I don’t know if it’s wetsuit allowed, thus last year it was. If I can choose, I always would go for No-Wetsuit swimming.
There is a single Transition, both for T1 and T2. Close to the lake and also to the running starting, so this part is quite ok.
The Bike course is a 40k lap around the region. It has a lot of curves and a couple of uphill, but in general it’s ok. Crossing fingers not to have the rainy/slippery conditions of last year. Here there will be so many fast guys in the time trial position turning wats on.
Finally the Running, with a 2 laps course over gravel and a very uncomfy hill close to the end. In this part, whether you’re done, the fresher guys pass you as a snail.
Once crossing the line, the amount of people, food offer (wratburst), beer etc. is great, so the atmosphere around the event is amazing. Definitely a room to spend 1 hour cheering the rest of the triathletes striving to hit their targets.
Sensations wise, I’d rather to compete this time on Saturday, a sprint distance and to switch off the whole Sunday. But, I guess I will be ready to struggle on the race day and enjoy such a beautiful race.
